The coming few months will see the end of this years “Architectural Positions” seminar series following the subject “Modernity and the Public Sphere”. Check out our calendar for event details. The mix of speakers is broad, and 3-person seminars look to be set for heated debates. The school’s goal is that: “The seminars will illustrate how architects, not just in their architectural production but more specificaly in their writing respond relentlessly to changes in the public sphere by adopting various ‘Architectural Positions’.”
The lineup will include (among others): Richard Sennett, Xaveer De Geyter, Leon Krier, Hans Kollhoff, Bernard Tschumi, Rem Koolhaas, Steven Holl and Lars Spuybroek. There is only a few seminars left – but they are also very good lineups.
Yesterday, the Munich based office hildundk.de gave an insight of their work at the Academie van Bouwkunst in Amsterdam. The office composes very individual solutions for each project, avoiding predefined styles. They attempt to catch people’s emotions by using ornaments and specific materials combined with a strong conceptual sensitivity. This “ornamentalism” has its roots in the southern part of Germany which still is influenced by baroque tradition. Hild’s approach is to decontextualize the ornament, effectively tattooing his buildings.

OMA Beijing has another beautiful variation on the classic skyscaper. To be built in Singapore. No twists, no morphs, no parametrics. Nevertheless bold and inventive. Like it…
What is the Rotterdam office actually busy with at the moment? Haven’t heard so much lately…
New Jersey was the NYoffice, right?

This past week I was at the MIPIM Developers Conference in Cannes, France representing a client. With my suit on, business cards ready and a dose of capitalist opportunism in tow, the pavilions and stands became my playground. It was great to see inside the world of top-level decision makers – investors, developers, builders, lawyers, and the like. Of course the highlights are surely the seaside terraces that serve up fine drinks and hors-d’oeuvres. Check out the selection of models on our FLICKR site, some of them will make you barf — especially the Krasnodar Region. Why are they so out of touch?
I’ve just added some architecture photography from a little trip to London to our flickr site. See a lot of Foster, some Adjaye, a bit of Alsop and spot the Rogers. Continue reading ‘2 Heavy-Weights, Alsop and a Newcomer’

On March 14 (2007) the Berlage Institute (Rotterdam) hosted two lectures with the title “Instant City: The Rise of Dubai”. Kees Christiaanse (Architect, Rotterdam) and George Katodrytis (Architect, Dubai) gave presentations while Roemer van Toorn moderated the event. Marc Angélil unfortunately was stuck at the Zurich airport because of the infamous Swiss weather.
Dubai is a gated community. What can we do about it? And can architecture politically engage a global market-driven power structure?
Kees answered, that Dubai is dominated by “gatedness”, “sameness”, “fadedness” and “maleness”.

Adobe just announced that the upcoming Photoshop CS3 release will be split into a basic and an extended edition. The extended edition will have two additional features:
- 3D and motion support with the ability to edit 3D content and incorporate it into 2D compositions, paint and clone over multiple video frames
- Comprehensive image analysis with new image measurement and counting tools
Could be an useful addition to the architect’s visualisation workflow. Could be a useless marketing stunt. We’ll know more in “spring 2007″.
Yesterday evening Olafur Eliasson held a lecture at the NAI, forming part of the “7 pillars of architecture” series (check our calendar for upcoming events!). His narrative was refreshingly engaging, hopping from the reasoning behind his work to early works, from perceptual experiments to the organisation of his studio.
Eliasson (OE on wikipedia) gained world-wide recognition with his ‘the weather project’ installation in the main hall of the modern tate. Continue reading ‘Olafur Eliasson @ NAi – Content kills Form?’
While Rotterdam’s notorious Witte de With Straat is full of new exhibitions in time for the recent Museumnacht, one photo exhibit should not be missed. The MKgalerie shows recent work by Dutch photographer Hans Wilschut. At times the images document architectural processes (construction), they also investigate architectural post-processes (abandonment). They are always engaging and having spoken to the artist about his recent photographic trip into China, we’re dying to see the new work. But that won’t go on show in the Netherlands too soon -the next Chinese exhibit will be in Shanghai, naturally. See it now – until the 25 March, 2007.
We focus on architecture related events in Rotterdam. But you’ll also find the occasional movie, or gallery opening in Brussels. If you want to see something on the list, tell us and send an email to m@dysturb.net.

The new Nissan Qashqai marketing campaign has been skating through the streets – and now landed on a temp skatepark along the A20 at the Giessenbrug crossing in one of Rotterdam’s notoriously horrible industrial areas – the Spaanse Polder. The video can be seen through none other than GooTube here. Clearly, the video kills the installation.
